Said Matrix. "Have you run into anyone in authority yet? Medical supplies are on the runabout I landed in with Dr. Sutton and Tesha. Crews should have unloaded them by now. Dr. Andersen was taken into a medical room, but I don't know her condition as yet. These damn communicators aren't working with all these magnetic storms." Said Matrix showing his frustration. (Reply Jackson) Matrix made it to the basement. The emergency lighting was on and flickering, that was concerning. Nolar and C'Nell were talking as he approached. "What can you tell me about the situation?" asked Matrix. (Reply C'Nell, Nolar) "I don't know myself, but so far there doesn't seem to the mass of Yorans that we saw at the landing zone. For now." continued Matrix as he looked around the area. He noticed what appeared to be generators and a few Yorans working in the area. (Reply C'Nell, Nolar) (Posted by Steve) ----- (Rosenante Sickbay, Sanok, Day 1, 2041) After securing the Yoran delegation in the conference room, Sanok went to sickbay to check on Dr. Scudder. He was lying motionless on a biobed, the EMH and several nurses tending him. The EMH had looked at Sanok and told him it would take some time to do a full work up. Sanok waited patiently until the EMH was ready with his report. Motioning for Sanok to follow, they stopped at a display screen, a computerized image of Scudder's brain. "Have you discovered what is wrong?" said Sanok. "Doctor Scudder is unconscious," said the EMH. "See this?" The EMH pointed to what appeared to be a tiny microchip. "It has attached itself to the wall of the blood vessel in his paracortex, and it's acting like an electromagnet." Sanok tilted his head to one side. He was not certain what that meant, but it sounded bad. "All the natural electricity that normally operates in that part of the brain, is instead going directly into the object. It is that natural electricity that is also supplying the power to run the device." In essence, Scudder's natural brain functions were acting as a battery for the device. The next thing Sanok needed to know, was what was the purpose of the device. He was certain he knew how it got there. "As long as Doctor Scudder's brain is functioning, the device will draw the power it needs," said the EMH. "Could you induce a coma, or initiate a controlled moment of brain death, then revive him?" said Sanok. "This is a sophisticated piece of technology, Captain. If I were to do that, it would simply turn itself back on." "Can you remove it?" "The object has embedded itself in the wall of a blood vessel. It's small enough not to cause a clot, but big enough to cause a hemorrhage if I remove it. I'd be tearing a blood vessel in his brain, and it would most certainly be fatal." The EMH tapped the console and the image changed to a text file. "I did a search to see if anything like this has been seen before, and I found several, all illegal within the Federation." Sanok quickly read the file. In his past duties as chief of security, he had come across reports of devices like this one. It was very similar to something used by the Romulans. "Find a way to remove it," said Sanok. "I will do more research on the device." "I will access my database, Captain, but I may not be-." "Find a way." With that, Sanok left sickbay and headed to his old office in the main security area. (reply none) (posted by Bob B.) ----- (Yora City Hospital, Allen, Day 1, 2042) Petty Officer Dave Allen was part of the security detail that went to Yora City in the first runabout. Flying over the city upon approach, things looked quiet, even peaceful. The majority of the city was dark, but there was sporadic lighting spread throughout the buildings and neighborhoods. The hospital, with a full generator back up, was a blazing beacon. There were about 200,000 people in the city, and most of them were certain to go there. It was probably going to be a mess. The initial landing had been some sort of park. A small number of Yorans approached them, but Lieutenant Commander Jackson had the security teams shoo them away. They were there to help, and it was sad to chase them away, but the area needed to be secured before any help could be rendered. David had heard that Doctor Andersen was injured on the way down. The weather control net wasn't working, and it seemed Yora III had natural electrical storms in the upper atmosphere, so the trip in had been rough. David had been mildly surprised that only one person had been injured. Of course, it made him wonder again why Starfleet didn't have seat belts in their vehicles.... Plans were quickly changed, and the Starfleet team got back in the runabouts and headed directly to the hospital. There was a landing pad on the roof, but it could handle only two runabouts at a time. The medical and engineering ships landed there, while the two containing the security teams, landed in a lot behind the building that was used for outside exercise and therapy. The small security teams linked up with local police, and set up a perimeter around the main entrance. It had been calm, but more and more people had gathered, and they were demanding to be let inside. David tapped his comm badge. "Allen to Jackson. Things are beginning to heat up out here. Can you come and assess the situation?" David heard Jackson respond, but there was static and interference. "I'm sorry, sir, but I couldn't make out what you said." More static. David sighed and closed the channel. Hopefully, Jackson would come outside. (reply Jackson, Signos, any) (posted by Bob B.) ----- (Yora City Hospital, Nolar, Day 1, 2044) Someone escorted Gan to the basement. He had expected the basement to be as large as the Hospital itself but it was actually ten times larger. It seemed like a huge facility. ~It isn't just the Hospital main power.~ he realized. In any case, he wanted to check the Hospital main power system first. He was brought into a room that weren't really any power source. It seemed more like an engineering pool table. He was interrupted when C'Nell arrived. I am here to assist; Engineering was my secondary class in the Academy-I am at your disposal" C'Nell said. "Good then. I am checking the current power output and power consumption of the Hospital. I had hoped they would bring me to the actual power source, but for the moment, this will do." explained Gan. What he found was actually unbelievable. He had anticipated the Yoran to use an emergency power source to help power their Hospital. Actually, it was the contrary. Most of the emergency energy that should have been used to power the Hospital were powering something else. It was surprising the Hospital still had enough power to maintain their current activity. "Heatlh doesn't seem to be the Yoran priority. It should be ours though. The current Hospital power source won't last for very long if we don't help." Gan said to C'Nell. (Reply C'Nell, iyw) As he said that, Commander Matrix arrived. “What can you tell me about the situation?” asked Matrix. "They do lack power, but the reason might be what should interest us. I can't make any sense of this, but perhaps you can. “I don’t know myself, but so far there doesn’t seem to the mass of Yorans that we saw at the landing zone. For now…” continued Matrix as he looked around the area. He noticed what appeared to be generators and a few Yorans working in the area. "You interested in what is in there? It does seem intriguing doesn't it. What could be so dear to the Yoran? Everyone has its secret. What do you think you will find out?" asked Gan (Reply Matrix) (Posted by Nick) ----- (Yora City Hospital, Jackson, 1, 2049) Steve Matrix was updating Tom Jackson Tom listened as his old friend spoke. Jackson could tell Steve was frustrated. Steve asked him if he had run into any Yora medical officials as yet. “Not yet Steve. I will make sure we get the supplies to them before I head back to the LZ’s” Tom told his friend. (reply: Matrix) Tom watched his friend head down to the basement to assist in power restoration for the hospital. Jackson was getting the feeling that there was either a virus of some type at work or physical sabotage. Jackson began a search for the hospital Chief of Staff – Matrix was correct – the supplies needed to get sent out and used. (Reply: None) (Posted by: Bill W.) ----- (Yora City Hospital, Jackson, Day 1, 2052) Tom heard bits and pieces of incoming transmission. Jackson tapped his badge and said "Allen?" (Reply: Allen) Still more static. Ton sighed and; headed towards Allen's location. His senses were uneasy. Ton doubled, his pace The distance was short and soon he was standing with Allen. The NCO hadn't been too far from right in his estimation of the scene. Tom liked around and asked "report" . (Reply: Allen) Tom moved forward and spoke to the angry crowd. "People e are here to help. But we just did get here and we need time" Tom said. The crowd murmured. Jackson? had this think fast. He spoke again. "If you need tone seen you will be seen. Your medical personnel ate arriving momentarily. They'll assess each of you. Those deemed critical will go first.". He paused to collect his thoughts. Some Federation teams had also begun to arrive. Tom went on. " Those that are not ill but in need will be directed to the appropriate team for their needs" . Tom holed this would hold them off for a while. (No Reply) (Posted by: Bill) ----- (Yora City Hospital, Allen, Day 1, 2055) The situation outside the hospital was getting tense. More and more people were arriving, and they now overwhelmingly outnumbered the Starfleet security team and the local police. David was relieved when Lieutenant Commander Jackson finally arrived. "Report." "Sir, the hospital is drawing the people here, as it's the only place in the city with power still operating. From what I can see, there aren't any major injuries or anything like that. They just want to get inside." David shrugged. Jackson nodded and moved to address the crowd. "People, we are here to help, but we just did get here, and we need time." People in the crowd didn't seem to care how long it was taking, as many began to crumble and complain. "If you need to be seen, you will be seen," said Jackson. "Your medical personnel are arriving momentarily. They'll assess each of you. Those deemed critical will go first. Those that are not ill, but in need, will be directed to the appropriate team for their needs." "We're not interested in your excuses, Starfleet!" A man shouted from near the front, and many of the people cried out in agreement. "I trade on the Ferengi Exchange and I need to check my portfolio now!" ~That was odd~, thought David. Things could escalate into a mob situation, and there were probably injured people, and that guy wanted to access his stocks. "I watch the Federation News Service feed everyday. When is that going to be restored?" Another man shouted. "I'm missing my favorite holo drama," exclaimed a woman. Dozens of people began demanding access to all sorts of programming and services, but none were saying a thing about needing medical care. What was happening here? (reply Jackson, Signos, any) (posted by Bob B.) ----- (Yora City Hospital, Jackson, 1, 2102) Tom listened to the crowd. Funny thing that what he heard didn't make sense to him. They were to demands for stock market access and other banking data. No one in the car seems to have a medical condition. Thus was weird. The hospital staff seemed slightly better shape then the crowd. They were, reminding him slightly of addicts. One time on a trade mission for Pez he had witnessed addicts coming off a high. . This started the germ of an idea in Tom's mind. The concept was hazy. Jackson turn to Allen and said " Tell Cmdr Matrix I'd to talk to him " (Reply: Allen) The crowd was getting to get restless for once again. Tom knew he had to act quickly . As she was rushed inside, Doctor Sutton gave his report to the Yoran doctor that had met them. They were led inside and taken to a trauma room. Now, nearly an hour later, Tesha was alone with Andersen, Doctor Sutton having left to see what he could do to help with the blackout situation. Doc Andersen was going to be all right. "You know, Doc, you really gave me a scare. Seeing you lying on the floor in the runabout, your head bleeding, well, I thought we'd lost you." Tesha smiled. Her antennae were bobbing. "I know you're going to make it through this, but it would be nice if you'd wake up now. A lot of people need our help here, and you're one of the best doctors I know." Tesha paused and looked around to make sure no one else was there. "You're also okay, for an officer." Tesha chuckled, her antennae bobbing again. Tesha leaned back in her chair and sighed. "There is something strange happening here, Doc. All the medical people seem to be normal, but non-medical personnel are off somehow. They seem nervous about something, and some are shaking. It's like they want something they can't get." She paused to think about what she just said. "They need something they can't get." She stood up suddenly. "I'll be back as soon as I can." The most important, for the moment, was to make sure the Medical Facilities and Replicators were running. Gan wanted to have it done before midnight. They would wait for the morrow to try to get the answers they were looking for. Gan had asked the engineering crew to meet him just outside of the hospital. Ensign C'Nell was with them. "We have a lot of work to do before midnight. I want our medical facility and replicators to be running tonight. We had brought plasmas but until they give us access to their power facility, we won`t be able to use it. So we are gonna use plan B. We will need to bring one of the shuttle beside the Hospital, and use its warpcore to power the facility. We have brought the conduits to connect it to the Hospital EPS system. With those storms coming, we are better having it done quickly. So I want team A to get all the conduits and pieces out of the shuttle, and I want team B to start assembling the conduits together. I and C'Nell are gonna check the type of EPS conduits and specifications they use to see how we will connect it to theirs." Gan ordered. A few questions were asked and then the whole teams started. Gan and C'Nell headed back to the basement. Again, the few Yorans working were staring at them, following every move they made. "Excuse me. I need to access your power conduits. If I am not mistaken, it is in that room right?" asked Gan. The Yoran engineer stared at him for a good long ten seconds. "Follow me" he said. He didn't lead them to the room in question. Rather he brought them to another room, where there was a few EPS conduits. ~I have tried. Here will do for the moment....but there are hiding something.~ "What do you think is going on ensign?" On his way back to the surface, Gan started to remember what his father and mother had told him about what the Cardassians did to the Bajorans and the Maquis. The torture techniques and products used. He had witnessed some cases himself. (Posted by Nick) ----- (Yora City Hospital, Nolar, Day 1, 2203) Gan Nolar had hoped to see his superior and FO Commander Matrix. However, he was in an appointment with the administrator, so Gan decided to seek for Jackson insight. He saw him in the Hospital, seemingly trying to manage all the demands he received. From the look of it, Jackson seemed unsettle, but it was hard to say why. There were a lot of people, so perhaps he had problem managing the demands. "Hello sir. It seems our new power system is already quite popular. It is strange, don't you think? I have never been someone who was in a hurry to go to the hospital. Unless....I have known Ensign Scudder to be considered pretty by human women, but I would have never expected the Yorans, including the males, to come in mass to be treated by him. Doesn't it seem strange to you, sir?" said Nolar grinning. (Reply Jackson) "That is intriguing. I had expected the Yorans would want to use the Hospital power for other purposes, but for such futility. I find it concerning that you know nothing about this or you are unwilling to tell me what you know." Asked Matrix. The Administrator paused. His demeanor changed as he addressed Matrix. "Commander.yes. I am concerned about that has happened in the past few days. I have inquired at high levels, but have been told not to worry. This is all just a result of the weather and the associated outages. I must admit these issues are unprecedented in our history. I can't recall anything of this magnitude impacting our planet like this." "Yes Administrator. This all could be the result of a series of unfortunate events that your people are ill equipped to deal with. However, we've seen no response from your government. No response in any of your emergency personnel to speak of. My crew here has been able to solicit help from your engineering staff, but on a wider scale there is no evidence of an official government response. Perhaps I am missing something?" asked Matrix. (Reply none) (Posted by Steve) ----- (Yora City Hospital, Matrix, Day 1, 2219) Matrix followed the Administrator silently as he made his way to a private office. The area was dimly lit by choice. A few times Matrix asked where they were going, but the Administrator insisted on silence. The Administrator motioned Matrix over to a large desk and entered a code into the computer. A few moments passed and a series of files appeared on the screen. "What am I looking at Administrator?" asked Matrix. "These are copies of records I've kept on patients over the past several years. On the right are my copies I've kept in an independent and secure area. The files on the left are official hospital files. They should be identical and indeed the file sizes and time stamps are identical. Even the serialized numbers issued with each record at the time they were created are identical. However, they are different in content." Replied the Administrator. Matrix sat down behind the desk and watched the monitor while the Administrator opened two files. "See.this is a full body scan of patient IY9312 I took myself. You can see here it shows something under the patient's skin.here." Said the Administrator pointing to the image. "Now this is the official hospital file of the same patient, same scan. There is no indication of any foreign body in the patient. I've looked at over a thousand of these files. All have been altered in some way. Even the patient notes have been altered on some to hide something. If a patient complained of a rash, headaches or other symptoms associated to a foreign device or body.it was removed from the official hospital records. " Matrix looked at the Administrator in the dim light, "What do you think all this means?" asked Matrix. "There is something going on with our population. I don't know what exactly. I've inquired into the official hospital records, but I've been assured that they cannot be altered without a trail of who and when. Current events have led me to believe there is something here even members of our government may not know about or are covering up." Replied the Administrator. "Interesting" said Matrix. "Some of what we've witnessed in our short time here could be helpful with these records Administrator. " "Surely Commander you have the technology to verify my findings. Perhaps you can find out who and how these files were altered?" asked the Administrator. "We do Administrator, but unfortunately I cannot contact my ship due to these magnetic storms. Once we are able to do so I would like to upload your files and have my engineering crew see what they can find out." Said Matrix. A loud noise was heard down the hall and instantly the Administrator shutdown his computer and pulled Matrix into a darker area of the room. Matrix pulled his phaser and tricorder in response. The Administrator said quietly, "No Commander, no weapons. Keep quiet.I can get us out of here." David had searched, but did not find the FO. Returning outside the hospital, David had given his report to Jackson, who didn't seem happy. Things outside with the crowd had remained stable, but anyone with experience could sense things could blow at any moment. A particularly unruly man was arguing with a Yoran police officer, which led to some shoving, but things didn't escalate, as some others from the crowd pulled the man away. Nolar from engineering had come outside to talk with Jackson. David didn't know what they were planning, but something needed to be done. As if on cue, the unruly man had taken charge of a small group from the crowd, and he began shouting, demanding the people be allowed inside to 'get some tech'. Get some tech? Now what did that mean? There was a sound of glass breaking, followed by a thud. One of the Yoran police officers was bleeding from his forehead. Another officer struck someone from the ground with a nightstick. Chaos erupted. People rushed forward, crashing into the police and the Starfleet security forces. Punches were flying. Legs were kicking. People were falling and being stepped on. Two man came at David, but he ducked the blow from one, parried the other, and put him down with a judo move. More were co0ming. The crowd had finally turned into a mob. NRPG: This is a big one, folks. :) (reply Jackson, Signos, Nolar) (posted by Bob B.) ---- (Yora City Hospital, Signos, Day 1, 2221) Jessica waited outside the hospital holding the line with the rest of the tactical and security personnel. She listened to Jackson try to silence the growing crowd to no avail. She still believed that they should not of given up the landing zone so easily now everyone's focus was the hospital's and the crowd outside had continued to grow steadily. Now surrounded and the crowd growing more angry by the moment was making matters worse and more dangerous. Then it happened a shattering of glass then the crowd surged forward turning into an mob. The combined security force tried to hold but along the defensive line the perimeter began to fall apart. Jessica saw a man raise a arm over a federation security offer a broken bottle in his hand. She moved as his arm came down grabbing his wrist before he could strike the officer. Using his momentum against him she continued the motion of his arm redirecting it away from the officer, twisting his arm around behind his back. The man grunted in pain as his shoulder was pulled in an unnatural angle. She turned opened herself away from the man and threw him to the ground, the broken bottle skidding away. "Commander Jackson, we are to open here to hold this ground." She screamed over the fighting mob, Jessica knew they had to find a more defensible location before they were over ran completely. Turning to a small group of tactical officers, "I need you all to set up fighting positions in the hallway just inside the hospital entrance. The rest will buy you as much time as we can." (reply Jackson) She moved across the field to Jackson's side, another combatant moved to engage the security force. Jessica not wanting to wast time pulled her phaser and fired sending him to the ground. Reaching Jackson she spoke, "We need to fall back before we get over run. Into the hospital that main hallway will give us enough room to make a firing line and focus the mob into a kill zone that we can manage with our numbers I'm suggesting stun grenades, and phasers." She knew Jackson did not want to resort to weapons. "Sir, I'm aware that these are civilians but if we do not act people are gonna get hurt if not killed. I suggest we use the shuttles to teleport wounded and those who need medical support directly into the hospital and seal off the lower floors till we get everything here locked down." (reply Jackson) A man reached the perimeter grabbing Jessica from behind in a attempt to drag her off the line and into the mob. Slamming her heel into his foot loosened his grip, slamming her head into his face released her from his grip. The man made a fatal error he went after what appeared the easiest target and paid the price for it. Once free she turned and forcefully raised her knee into his midsection sending the man to the ground. (reply Jackson, Allen, any involved.) (posted by Matthew Locke) ----- (Yora City Hospital, C'Nell, Day 1, 2222) C'Nell separated from Nolar, he was thinking of his own solutions to the situation he had observed they had symptoms of being withdrawn from something. C'Nell walked towards the medical section. A Yoran doctor intercepted him "can I help?" "Yes logically as a Yoran you will know more about their anatomy, I have noticed that many-including yourself; have been exhibting symtoms not unlike a drug withdrawal" "Its natural" the doctor said before leaving-odd C'Nell headed towards the Starfleet field medical area, "Who is available Crewman?" "Ill go see sir?" (Reply any medical officer, free) (posted by Nathan) ----- (Yora City Hospital, Matrix, Day 1, 2223) Matrix lowered his phaser and stayed quiet. The noise in the hall subsided and was no more. The Administrator stood up and walked a short distance into the adjoining room. It was dimly lit. Matrix recognized it as one of the hospitals labs. The Administrator was entering a combination on a large safe and opened it. The room filled with the white light spilling from the refrigerated vault. Matrix was motioned over and watched as the Administrator took out a few non-descript containers. Carefully selected, but the way the Administrator skipped over the closer containers only to reach a ways into the vault and to the left. They were labeled, but without names. "What are these Administrator?" asked Matrix. The Administrator reminded silent and opened each and pulled out a small black device. He placed each under a magnifying device similar to a multi-phase medical scan. The image blinked on the display before them. The blue-green images were clear and sharp. "These are just two of the devices we extracted from a few of our citizens. These should be the implants available through med services, but they are not. We know little about them, but we do no they are not Yoran technology." Said the Administrator. Matrix stared at each image carefully, but said nothing. The technology while obviously having some medical function seemed oddly familiar. "Do you know anything about this technology Commander?" asked the Administrator. Matrix took the scanner and moved over each image carefully, noting the detail of each device. He could identify a power source and what appeared to be a transmitter and receiver. Something caught his eye on one of the devices and he focused the imaging device to get a better look. Taking out his tricorder Matrix scanned the devices. A few seconds later the tricorder registered the devices basic elemental structure, identified several communication frequencies emanating from each device and its structural makeup. It told Matrix all he needed to know. "No Administrator I've never seen anything like these." Said Matrix as he closed his tricorder and put it away. "Did you device tell you anything?" asked the Administrator. "Only what the device is made up. No identifying marks or known technology to the Federation. Its indeed a puzzle." Replied Matrix. "Administrator, I think its best we get back to why we're here and get to repairing your facility. I need to check in on my crew. I think it best that you keep what you told me to yourself for now. Once we have stabilized power and your medical needs I would like to review these again later and learn more about that you've discovered." Continued Matrix. "Of course Commander." Replied the Administrator as he locked up the specimen vault. "This way please." Covertly, she was scanning everyone in sight. She had been doing this for the better part of an hour, and she collected enough data to prove what she suspected. Now it was time to report her findings. Following the proper chain of command, Tesha tried Doctor Sutton first, but had no idea where he was. Trying the trauma room, and several labs, he was nowhere to be found. She was beginning to become concerned, so she mentally added that to what she needed to report. Tesha considered Lieutenant Commander Jackson, but she was hearing some talk from hospital personnel, that there was an unruly crowd gathering outside. As chief of security, it was likely Jackson was outside dealing with that. While she was looking for Lieutenant Commander Matrix, a crewman from the Rose rushed up to her. "Petty Officer Tesha!" "Yes, Crewman....?" Tesha's voice trailed off as she tried to remember the man's name. "Blair." "Yes, of course. What can I do for you Blair?" "Ensign C'Nell sent me to find someone from medical. He needs to talk about something." "And you picked me?" Blair shrugged. "Doctor Scudder stayed on the Rose. Doctor Andersen was injured. No one has seen Doctor Sutton. You were the first person I found that can help." "I see. Lead on." Blair took Tesha to where C'nell was waiting. "Ensign C'Nell, sir, I found someone from medical." "Petty Officer Tesha, sir. What can I do for you?" (reply C'Nell) (posted by Bob B.) ----- (Yora City Hospital, Matrix, Day 1, 2225) Matrix made his way back to the main hospital entrance to check on his crew and heard people yelling and screaming long before he arrived. Pushing his way to the front of the hospital staff he was greeted by an angry mob. The security teams were desperately trying to keep the Yorans from entering the hospital and possibly looting the place. Matrix made his way over to Jackson and drew his phaser. "Tom.this doesn't look good. We need to calm these people down if possible, otherwise we'll have to take drastic measures." Said Matrix scanning the angry crowd. (Reply Jackson) "Understood. I need to get to the Rose.some interesting developments with my meeting with the Administrator." Continued Matrix. (Reply Jackson, Nolar, any) "I can't go into it now, but this information must be delivered to the Captain immediately. I assume communications haven't been restored.do we have a shuttle available?" asked Matrix. (Reply Jackson, any) (Posted by Steve) ----- (Yora City Hospital, C'Nell, Day 1, 2226) "Petty Officer Tesha sir. What can I do for you?" "At ease, I need to get a medical opinion on something; but not here-lets move to somewhere the locals are not" (Reply Tesha) C'Nell moved, he headed towards one of the empty shuttles once he was well within the landing site he leaned against the deactivated nacelle. It was then that he began to speak to the Petty Officer "I have observed something odd about the Yorans, they are shaking, there pupils also are dilated. These symptoms I have observed have got progressively worse as we have been present; I wonder if they are prone to some disease-perhaps something we are carrying or whether... perhaps they cannot cope with shock. The symptoms are much like withdrawal but-what drug would an entire culture take? It is unlikely but we must investigate. The Doctors may be aware of what we are referring to, either way I believe we should do our investigations discretely. In some ways a junior officer such as yourself is better for this; people would suspect senior medical crew" (Reply Tesha) (Posted by Nathan) ----- (Yora City Hospital, Jackson, Day 1, 2227) Tom and Lt Nolar were discussing an option that sounded intriguing to tom. Nolar went on to explain "We could protect the Hospital using force fields. I told everyone they were going to be handy. With the power provided by one of the shuttle, we have the power necessary to erect several. We could also replicate boiling oil. It is always a good way to get people away from the walls." Tom was again impressed by the thinking of this officer and replied “Good thought Lieutenant – See to it. I’ll have troops at each entrance and exit to serves as a backup”. (Reply: Nolar) Nolar left to take care of the plan. Tom made sure each exit/entrance has forces stationed. There. He wanted to have the Yora Security folks to take the lead where possible. “Jackson to Security Teams at the hospital – Lt Nolar is setting up force fields to blanket the hospital – do not let anyone enter or exit without my express consent – Jackson out” If the poo hit the fan he’d take the heat! The crowed was turning uglier by the minute and he hoped Nolar was quick about his work! (Reply: None) (Posted by: Bill W.) ----- (Yora City Hospital, Tesha, Day 1, 2228) C'Nell said, "At ease. I need to get a medical opinion on something, but not here. Let's move to somewhere the locals are not." Tesha relaxed and followed C'Nell to where the runabouts had landed earlier. Casually leaning against one of them, C'Nell continued with what he needed. "I have observed something odd about the Yorans." Tesha had observed something as well. It wasn't really hard to miss, though medical and science personnel were more apt to see it. "They are shaking, their pupils also are dilated. These symptoms I have observed, have got progressively worse as we have been present." And they would, surmised Tesha. C'Nell went on to speculate what could be causing this in the Yorans, including suggesting some sort of withdrawal, though he did not understand what type of drug the people in such an advanced culture would take. He then suggested that Tesha covertly try to find the answer. "Ensign C'Nell, sir, I already have the answer for you," said Tesha. "I noticed the same behavior, and began speculating what it could be. It struck me that the people were lacking something they wanted or needed. I used a medical tricorder and began moving about, scanning people without anyone noticing. "Most Yorans have a chip implanted just below the skin, at the base of their skulls. From what I've heard the people say, it connects them to a worldwide cyber network. Now, I'm a med tech and not a doctor, but based on the data I have, it seems there is some sort of chemical reaction in their brains that has caused the Yorans to be addicted to this tech. Now that the power is off, and they've been without it for nearly three days, they're showing literal signs of withdrawal. "If we don't get the power back on, things will get worse, and we'll likely see people with permanent brain damage, or even death. Their desire to get their tech fix, will be as powerful and driving as any addiction." Tesha tapped her tricorder. "I can upload the data to your tricorder, sir. Oh, there is one more thing that was very odd. None of the hospital personnel are showing any signs of withdrawal. Patients have it, but not any of the medical people. I can only surmise that because the hospital has emergency power, they somehow still getting limited access to the tech." "Hey, you two!" Before C'Nell could respond, they were interrupted by three Yoran men. They were large, their faces were pale, and they looked like they'd been out partying all night. The one that had called to them was holding a hand weapon. The other two had clubs. "Give us access to the computers on your runabouts. Give it to us and we'll leave you alone." The man pointed his weapon at C'Nell, though his hands were shaking slightly. Tesha had managed to move so she was slightly behind the larger C'Nell, partially blocking her from the men. Very slowly, she reached for the cricket phaser she had with her.... (reply C'Nell) (posted by Bob B.) ----- (Rosenante Sickbay, Scudder, Day 1, 2229) Paul listened to the sound for what seemed hours, a regular rhythm, a shff, shff, which at first he thought sounded like a mechanical ocean. And now it finally grew closer -- the source was far away, that was the reason he couldn't guess what it was, and now it was moving toward him. Shff. Shff. And as it grew closer, the sound evened out. Paul could hear the quick strike, a rich sonorous bass. Boom. Boom. It was a drum. It was the musaharati. Dawn was coming, and soon 11-year-old Paul and his sister Reezy would begin another day of fasting. The musaharati's drum woke the sleeping children with enough time to enjoy one final meal, a meal which had to keep them through to sundown, when Paul and his sister would again feast. But something was wrong. Paul tried to rise but he couldn't. He glanced down at his bed but it was not his bed, he was in a hospital. And the sound of the drum, too regular to be natural, wasn't a drum at all. A group of men entered the hospital room, all of them laughing, eating and drinking. One of the men emitted the rhythmic beat, but it was an electronic pulse, a piercing tone. Another gave a toast and the group touched their glasses. The glasses shattered violently, and the men laughed as glass shards filled the room like a swarm of bees. A shard struck Paul, sending what felt like an electric chill along his nerves, and the glass cut a deep but bloodless gash in Paul's neck. Paul felt hollow, wondering why he had no blood. He looked up and the men were looking directly at him, silent now, and it terrified him. Paul's eyes shot open to see the Rose's EMH looking dispassionately down at him. "Ah -- can you hear me now, Dr. Scudder?" Paul looked puzzlingly back. "Yes. Of course I can hear you." Paul realized suddenly that he was in a biobed, the rhythmic sound from his dream in reality a soft tone emitted by the bed to indicate some change in the occupant's condition -- Paul's condition. "Please report," Paul requested, drily. "About five minutes ago, your biobed signaled for normative brain activity, which appears to have been most likely a dream state. With no doctors presently onboard, I was automatically activated." As the EMH told Paul of his coma-like state and the implant discovered on his brain, Paul suddenly realized how exhausted he felt. And he remembered the Captain, the Yoran delegation. Paul interrupted the still rambling EMH. "Is the Captain onboard? I need to speak to him." (reply any in Sickbay) (posted by Mark V.)
